Today's Rehearsal
From Bob Zarfoss

Lanceros,

First of all, my thanks to everyone who attended today's rehearsal and who made it a successful one. That was one of our better rehearsals, I think, in some time. I'd hope that after today you'd all feel rather comfortable with Hang 'em High and Stars and Stripes, and with the drum solos inside of Stars and Stripes. Walk Alone should not be a problem, nor should the street beat.

We made some progress with the Snow Duck, too. We WILL play that solo in the square in York for St. Patty's Day, so work hard on it.
We'll make that the center of our efforts next rehearsal. The snares need to learn Letter "A," and we all need to work on the new parts, and then on transitions, and finally on putting the entire solo together ensemble wise.

There are several things I'd like you to keep in mind as we move
forward: we must continuously think about maintaining a good tempo and not allowing tempo to drag; we must continue to work on dynamics; we must think not only about what we're playing as individuals, but we must listen within each section and also the ensemble.

With the addition of Kristy on cymbals, we're looking at four cymbal players, which would be our best complement of cymbals since I've been there. The cymbal and quad sections can be among the strongest ever. With Russ on rudi bass, we're on more solid footing, but we could use one or two more rudimental basses. We really need regular bass drummers; at the moment it's just Charlie, who was wailing today, and Larry, so if you know anyone who is interested in the drum line, please invite them to the next rehearsal, which you must remember is at Hanover HS.

Finally, I want to reiterate our welcome to Kristy; she's going to be an asset to the line.

I'll see you in two weeks. Remember to practice, and when you can't practice, remember to think the parts and practice them mentally.

REHEARSAL
From Tom Kittinger

Thanks for another GREAT rehearsal today!  We were able to accomplish a great deal once again and are closer to putting a marvelous unit on the street for the St. Pat's Parade in York, in a month and a half................music for that parade will be: "Hang 'em High," "Stars and Stripes" and "You'll Never Walk Alone."  The date is Saturday, March 15th and we WILL be performing a brief concert on the square prior to the parade start.

We welcomed FOUR (4) new members into our ranks today:  in the soprano section, Bill Kirk; in the baritone section, Dave Grote and Mike Anderson, and in the drum line, Kristy Grote.  It is GREAT to have them all with us, and we are hopeful they enjoyed OUR presence as much as we enjoyed THEIRS.
WELCOME TO THE LANCERS!!

IMPORTANT NEWS:  OUR NEXT REHEARSAL, SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 10th, WILL BE HELD AT HANOVER HIGH SCHOOL.  PLEASE ENTER AT THE REAR OF THE BUILDING..........WE WILL BE USING THE BAND AND CHORAL REHEARSAL ROOMS AND WILL THEN COMBINE IN THE BAND ROOM AT THE END OF REHEARSAL.

This change is due to a District Legion mtg. that will be taking place in the social hall of the Legion the same afternoon.  Please pass this word along to those you know who don't have email.

FYI....................an "outside" arranger (sorry, I can't remember his name) has been hired by the corps to create and arrangement of the Chase hit, "Get It On."  The arranger is currently working on some arrangements for a number of high school band's 2008 field shows, so we have to wait our turn.  He also already has some Latin arrangements that we are going to be able to look at....................that style seemed to be a favorite on the questionnaires you returned, so we are looking into the possibilities.

Thanks again for your attendance, your enthusiasm and your love of creating good drum corps music.  See you at Hanover H.S. on Sunday, February 10th.

Enjoy your two weeks, and MEMORIZE MUSIC!!!

Today's Rehearsal
From Bob Zarfoss

Lanceros,

My thanks to all who attended today's rehearsal. As Tom mentioned, it was a good start for our forthcoming season. There's much to be done this year. If you weren't there today, I'll reiterate what we need to do and learn. For those who were there, you already know but perhaps hearing again will move you to practice even harder.

We're keeping the following from last year: Walk Alone, no change; The Snow Duck 1, as we were learning when we took our hiatus; the street beat, unchanged; Stars and Stripes, with a new 32 count solo replacing the eight count one which were measures 39 and 40; Georgia on my Mind, unchanged.

The following has been resurrected: Hang 'em High. This song will now start at measure 11, I believe, and the part for that measure is altered for everyone to but one accent on the first beat. Starting at measure 12, the song's the same as always.

New this year: the aforementioned 32 count solo in Stars and Stripes; a Beattles medley by Brian; Tchaikowsky's Serenade for Strings, which so far is just for horns. It's really impressive.
There's another new number, to be selected; and a new drum warm up exercise.

Given that the Snow Duck has to be refined, that we must work on Stars and Stripes with its new solo, and that there are numerous new songs (for which I've yet to write parts!) we have a great deal of work to do before we hit the street in March.

If you haven't received any of the following, the new solo for Stars and Stripes, a copy of Hang 'em High, the new warm up, or the Snow Duck 1, let me know and I'll mail you parts at once.

There is reason to believe that this year will be a good one.
Remember that we need you at rehearsals as often as possible, and that we need to proceed with a positive attitude.

I'll see you in two weeks, if not before.

UPDATE...
From Tom Kittinger

Thanks to ALL who made it to rehearsal today.  It was a GREAT turnout for our first of 2008 and we accomplished a great deal, even though we took time out to do some very important "voting."

The following "gigs" were APPROVED for our 2008 schedule, and we need YOU to put them on your calendars NOW, and do everything possible to make yourself available at these events.  The success of the corps depends on it!

YORK ST. PAT'S PARADE - Saturday, March 15th - concert on the square at Noon, followed by the parade.

SHENANDOAH APPLE BLOSSOM PARADE - Saturday, May 3rd - concert on the first block of the parade route around 12:30pm and parade at 2:00pm.

HANOVER MEMORIAL DAY PARADE - Monday, May 26th - 8:30am
GETTYSBURG MEMORIAL DAY PARADE - Monday, May 26th - 2:00pm

BRASS BAND FESTIVAL CONCERT - Saturday, June 21st - 6:00 - 6:40pm Penn Lawn Stage - Gettysburg College

DUNDALK/TOWSON 4th OF JULY PARADES - Friday, July 4th - 8:00am & 10:30am

HAVRE DE GRACE INDEPENDENCE PARADE - Saturday, July 5th - 2:00pm

It was also approved by the corps to have Brian Moul check into another performance for the York Revolution baseball team at some point during their season.  We also voted to have Rick Anderson check-out the possibilities of the corps presenting a performance at the York Fair "Band Showcase" on Sunday, September 7th.  Finalization of either of these events would be brought before the corps for a "vote" before accepting the offer.

We were able to split into sectionals today and work on the "ending" two sections of the Beatles' Medley, and ran through "Pieces of Dreams" although there will be a different ending written for this selection.  Brian re-arranged the beginning of "Hang 'em High" to give us an immediate impact on our audience without the original "build-up" into fortissimo.  Bob and the drum line were gracious enough to write another 31-beat solo into "Stars and Stripes," to give our lips an additional rest during that selection.  We were able to work on "Serenade for Brass (Strings)" and it is going to work into a fabulous warm-up piece for the corps.

Brian also wishes to "thank" all of you for your thoughts, prayers, cards and presence over the past few months, during the difficult times he and Anne have been going through.  He was amazed to find how many of you included the words, "you'll never walk alone" with your cards, another indication of the close, family-like atmosphere still existent within the corps. We want to keep that alive and well throughout 2008.

In the questionnaire, many of you suggested more "family-type" outings within the corps, and we are attempting to provide a number of those during the year.  More details will follow as they become available.

Our next rehearsal is scheduled for Sunday, January 27th at 2:00pm.  Please plan on joining us to continue to prepare for our 2008 season.  We welcomed Rick Adams, baritone, into our ranks today.  Please do your part in bringing along a potential new member as well.  There is no better way of advertising the corps than through our members, and word of mouth.  If they ever played a horn, or a drum, we can use them, if they are at all interested.  Once they sit in on a rehearsal, hear what we can sound like, see the fun we're having making music, and the family-like atmosphere we present, they'll be "sold."

Have a GREAT two weeks, and mark your calendars to be at rehearsal on January 27th.  BTW......................."HANG 'EM HIGH" WILL BE  IN THE LINE-UP FOR THE ST. PAT'S PARADE IN YORK!!  Make sure you have a copy, and can get it memorized by then.
