Yesterday's Rehearsal; Saturday
From Bob Zarfoss
Lanceros,
As always, my thanks to all who attended yesterday's rehearsal. I am every uplifted by being with you, by the drumming, and by the laughs.
I know that sometimes we laugh more than drum, but that's quite OK as long as we're prepared, and I feel sure we are. I like, too, when the new members of the line are contributing significantly to our success, both as performers and as comedians, or comediennes, right Kristy!
I'll see you on the bus Saturday morning. If time allows, we'll rehearse the solo before the parade, though I feel sure that everyone is prepared to play that and play it well. A bit of mental preparation will be a good thing, as you all know.
Since there's but one corps rehearsal in May, I will do my best to get the basement cleaned a bit and have one or two basement practices that month. I'll send some dates after Saturday's job.
Remember, quads, to work on that new figure I showed you. I will work on some new quad parts for the Snow Duck, so that your talents are both challenged and displayed. We're developing a balanced line, but we still need more members, so if you know anyone, please invite them. Remember, too, that the May rehearsal is at Hanover HS.
There are a few folks who've not been around lately, and I'd like to hear from you.
Till Saturday,
BOB

UPDATE
From Tom Kittinger
GREAT REHEARSAL TODAY!!!! What a fabulous sound, and the excitement for next Saturday's Winchester parade was eminent throughout the afternoon!! It appears we are going to have a MUCH better showing than last year, and that in itself is exciting. The more we have, the more incredible the sound will be.
A special "thanks" to Rick Anderson for filling-in for Brian today. It is always good to know that we have TWO very capable directors in our ranks.
Here is the time-frame you need to become familiar with prior to Saturday's peformance:
- Those riding the bus, it will leave the Legion Parking Lot at 9:00am, sharp! Please be sure you are there, have your equipment with you, have time to pay for your ride and are in your seat prior to 9:00am. (a side note.................plan on parking someplace OTHER than the parking lot behind the Legion.............we need to let that open for customers during the day)
- If you are driving to Winchester, you can park at the Shenandoah University auditorium, right off Rt. 81, and we will stop by there to pick you up and take you into the city to the parade beginning. PLEASE BE THERE, DRESSED AND READY TO BOARD THE BUS BY 11:am!! (someone from the SABF will be meeting us there to direct the bus into the city)
- Following the parade, we will board the bus and return you to the campus to your cars, and also to have our picnic before heading for home. With the number of corps members attending this parade, I'm not sure EVERYONE will fit on the bus, especially with equipment, etc., so if you can come-up with an alternative plan, please do so...................of course those who have paid to be on the bus will not have to worry about this.
- The picnic will take place behind the old National Guard Armory that is between the auditorium, and another campus building. There are tennis courts there and numerous picnic tables we are going to do our best to "reserve" for the corps.
It should be a fabulous day for all.......................keep your fingers crossed the weather will cooperate.
Here is the list I have for those riding the bus. If your name does not appear below, please let me know prior to Saturday morning:
Emily Hare
Tracy Perry
Keith Albright (2) Paid

Tom Kittinger Paid

Ken Myers
Peter Reck Paid

The cost is $8.00 per seat, and please have the proper amount for Saturday morning if you haven't paid yet.......................thanks!
Parade Music:
"Hang 'em High"
"Stars and Stripes"
"You'll Never Walk Alone"
Pre-Parade Concert Music:
"Georgia On My Mind"

(not sure if we're doing "Stars and Stripes" & "Never Walk" here, or not)
Check the web-site for directions, if you don't know how to get there......................it's pretty simple:

Looking forward to an incredibly rewarding day........................hope you are as well!! See you Saturday!!

REHEARSAL, SUNDAY, APRIL 27th - 2:00 - 5:00pm AT THE LEGION SOCIAL HALL!!
We will be doing our BEST to "fine-tune" the selections for the SHENANDOAH APPLE BLOSSOM FESTIVAL GRAND MARSHALL PARADE, scheduled for SATURDAY, MAY 3rd IN WINCHESTER, VA!! This is our BIGGEST PAYDAY OF THE ENTIRE SEASON, so it is of the utmost importance that we have a very good turnout in ALL FACETS OF THE CORPS!!!
To make the day more spectacular, we have planned a "Lancer Family Picnic" to follow the parade back in the area of the Shenandoah University, where many of you park your cars to take the bus into the parade start. A few items are needed on Sunday to complete our planning for the picnic:
1. WE NEED AN ACCURATE COUNT OF THOSE PLANNING ON BEING AT THE PICNIC!
(if you are unable to be at rehearsal, either Bill Reese, or myself needs to know BY SUNDAY if you and your family will be there, and how many!!!)
2. WE NEED TWO, DECENT-SIZED COOLERS TO ICE DOWN SODAS AND WATER FOR THE PICNIC.....................IF YOU HAVE ONE, PLEASE BRING IT WITH YOU ON SUNDAY, SO WE HAVE THEM TO FILL WITH ICE AND DRINKS TO PLACE ON THE BUS NEXT SATURDAY MORNING!! (I apologize ahead of time if we get many more than we need!!)
We will be presenting a 15 - 20 minute "concert" on the 1st block of the parade route prior to the parade start. That concert will feature the following: (not necessarily in this order)
"Georgia On My Mind"
"Hang 'em High"
"Stars and Stripes"
"the Snow Duck, or Summer Duck, or whatever it will be called by next Saturday"
"Hey Jude"
"You'll Never Walk Alone"
For the parade itself, we will be playing:
"Hang 'em High"
"Stars and Stripes"
"You'll Never Walk Alone"
Needless to say, these selections should be memorized!
The corps will be providing Ham & Cheese, Turkey & Cheese sandwiches, chips/pretzels and drinks for the picnic. If any of you would want to bring something else to share with the others, that will be fine, and greatly appreciated. It will be a fabulous way to relax for awhile and enjoy the beautiful weather I'm sure we will be having, as well as each other's company before heading out for the return trip.
Thanks ahead of time for your cooperation in ALL the above areas.
JUST AS A "HEADS-UP:"
OUR ONLY REHEARSAL IN MAY.................THE 18th...................WILL BE HELD AT HANOVER HIGH SCHOOL!!!
Hope to see you ALL on Sunday afternoon!!

York St. Patrick's Day Parade on WRCT this weekend
From Tom Kittinger
Here is some information I thought you'd appreciate.
Also, we will be "picknicking" following the Apple Blossom Parade in Winchester on Saturday, May 3rd. We are hoping to make it a "family affair," so please talk it over with everyone in your household. We will need a "count" of the number that will be there by rehearsal on Sunday, April 27th. The picnic will take place between the auditorium on Shenandoah University's campus and another building, behind the old National Guard Armory. There are tennis courts and numerous picnic tables. We will just have to make sure "some of us" get there early enough to grab the tables before someone else does. The corps will be providing Ham & Cheese and Turkey & Cheese sandwiches, soda, water & chips and pretzels. If you would like to bring additional items to "share," that would be fine also.
If any of you know the best possible place to purchase the soda, water, please let us know. We will also need someone to pick those items up so they can be put in coolers prior to that Saturday morning. The coolers could be put on the bus, or if anyone is driving, they could take them along as well. We will also need someone to pick-up the chips and pretzels for transport. I would assume Utz's outlet would be the best place to get those items. I would say take care of getting these items and then keep the receipts to give to Bill Reese for reimbursement. I'm sure some of you have done this in the past and are more familiar with the proper procedure than I...................just let me know who is doing what....................Bill Reese will be out of town on vacation the next week, but will be putting the sandwich order in the day following our rehearsal on the 27th. He will be picking the sandwiches up and bringing them to Winchester in his car.
Will look forward to hearing from you.......................remember to talk this over with your family so we have an accurate count of who is going to be there......................THANKS!!
Tom

Subject: York St. Patrick's Day Parade on WRCT this weekend
For those of you who have inquired about the broadcast of the 25th Annual York St. Patrick’s Day Parade on White Rose Community Television (Comcast Channel 18), I just noticed the following dates and times on the schedule:
Saturday, April 19
9:30 a.m.: Pre-parade entertainment at Continental Square
10:15 a.m.: 25th Annual York St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Sunday, April 20
3:30 a.m.: Pre-parade entertainment at Continental Square
4:15 a.m.: 25th Annual York St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Please be aware that WRCT may have several brief public service announcements between the two segments.
If you do not have Comcast Cable, live streaming is available at www.yorkcity.org (click on the WRCT link). Program listings are updated on this site weekly, so if you miss the parade this weekend, you might find it scheduled again in the future.
It is also my understanding that DVDs of the parade are available for purchase directly from White Rose Community Television at a cost of $10 each.
Please forward this email to others in your parade entry who may be interested. Thank you for your interest in the York St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Sunday's Rehearsal; Looking Ahead
From Bob Zarfoss
Lanceros,
First of all, my congratulations to the cymbal section for its perfect attendance on Sunday, and to the quads for working hard to improve. I also want to thank and encourage Marcus, who was the only bass at rehearsal. Marcus will be a good bass drummer, and I appreciate his being there. My thanks to Jared and Brian, whom I hope is feeling better, for being the only snares at Sunday's rehearsal.
I couldn't sleep last night, so at four a.m. I was awake and writing new quad parts in my head; some of them are really difficult. I'll try to write them out and bring them to the next practice. Then we'll figure how to add another part to the Duck and feature the quads. You guys inspire me!
My schedule is really crazy. I have AF guys here Thursday to practice most of the day, Friday we go to Harrisburg to practice, Saturday there's the APRDC convention. Next week, we have house guests and then leave for NC for three days. So, I won't see you till the following Sunday. I hope that everyone makes that rehearsal, and we really need everyone in Winchester. We especially need bass drummers there, and rudis!
Think drumming.

UPDATE...
From Tom Kittinger
Let me begin by apologizing to Bill Reese and Jim Fawber..................I have been "sitting" on this information since before I left for Spring Break (most likely the reason for the delay) and I had every intention of getting it out to all of you much earlier. With mid-term exams, mid-term grades needing to be registered, and preparations for our departure staring me in the face, I completely forgot about this. Even though that is a pretty feeble excuse, especially considering the importance and the honor of the following, it is the ONLY one I have.
If you remember last year's Pennsylvania Drum Corps Hall of Fame induction, two members of the Lancers, "Posie" Pfaff and Bob Zarfoss obtained that honor, and many of you attended the event. The 2008 ceremony will ALSO include TWO Lancer inductees, Jim Fawber as an Associate Level Member (5 years or more), and Bill Reese a Lifetime Level Member (25+ years of involvement in Drum Corps). What a fabulous honor for Jim & Bill as well as for the Lancers!
The induction ceremony is slated for Sunday, April 13th (our next rehearsal day) at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Harrisburg. Breakfast will be served at 9:00am with the induction ceremony taking place at 10:00am. You can check out the PADCHOF website for further details, or to see if there are any tickets available if you'd like to do the breakfast. Again, I apologize for not getting this out to you sooner. If it hadn't been for a mention of this in one of Martie Gourley's emails, I would probably forgotten it altogether...............the perils of entirely too many irons in the fire at the same time!
CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH JIM AND BILL!!! This is quite an honor for you, and I think it is equally as important to the history of the Lancers. I'm hopeful some of you will be able to be with Jim and Bill next Sunday morning, and that you'll also remember to congratulate them at rehearsal next Sunday afternoon. Hopefully, mention was made of this either in York at the parade, or at the last rehearsal.
