UPDATE...
From Tom Kittinger

Thanks to ALL who were able to work their schedules around the York Halloween Parade yesterday afternoon. There were literally thousands of people lining Market Street from one end to the other.

Aside from the numerous, avid Rick Anderson fans along the route, there seemed to be numerous Lancer fans as well. I heard one elderly lady say as we passed by, "it was about time we got back there." It's nice to know she remembered us from 1992, when, as I was told, was the last time we marched that parade. Brian sent me a brief note telling me we took 2nd place, in the judging.................he didn't mention who took 1st.

Regardless, it was a picture perfect day for a parade, and I think we did a rather stellar job....................I wasn't sure if my lips, or my legs were going to give-out first!

I wasn't able to return to the White Rose after the parade, but I'm sure everyone had a wonderful time. My daughter teaches at York High, and she gets there quite frequently when they have teacher's meetings, etc. She said she has never had anything that wasn't good. It was quite a nice gesture on Tom Seibel's part to haul us back to the fairgrounds, invite us back to the restaurant, and provide FREE appetizers to everyone. I'm hopeful Charlie Rupp will send him a "thank you" note on behalf of the Lancers.

Thursday night you need to be at G-burg H.S. by 6:30pm. Although I haven't heard, I would assume we will be in the orchestra room as we were last year. DON'T FORGET TO PARK IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL, INSTEAD OF BEHIND WHERE WE NORMALLY PARKED. I would assume our program (8:15 approx.) will consist of: "Georgia," "Star Wars," "Stars & Stripes," "the Duck," "You'll Never Walk Alone," and "America" with the G-burg H.S. Band. I apologize if I missed anything. FULL UNIFORM, MINUS SHAKO.

HAVE A GREAT SHOW!!!

Thursday's Concert
From Bob Zarfoss

Gentlemen,

Thanks to Kenny, I got a full report on the snares participation at the Halloween parade in York. I reiterate my regrets at not being there. Kenny also tells me that he has enough black heads that we may now use the "parade snares" or the full size ones, as we choose. That being the case, I suggest we use the traditional drums on stands for Gettysburg. That will be the choice unless some of you present a good reason for using the smaller drums. Remember, Jake will be playing, and I wonder if he has a the parade snare; I doubt it.

Some of you have already gotten the new warmup exercise. I'll bring copies to Gettysburg, then mail to anyone who hasn't gotten the part.

I will also be sending out dates for basement practices between now and January. I'll hope we can have several, during which we'd work on the new warmup, a part I've yet to write for "Pieces of Dreams," and we'll continue to refine the Duck as well.

I hope to see all of you Thursday in Gettysburg.

FYI......
From Tom Kittinger

OK...................here's the latest information I have regarding the York Halloween Parade.  As you know, we are in Division I, #41, so we will be stepping-off soon after the start of the parade. (supposed to be 2:00pm) You should plan on being in York between 12:30 & 1:00, and perhaps before, if you are planning on parking at the end and getting a ride back to the beginning. (more on that in a minute)  We will be in FULL-UNIFORM Sunday afternoon.

Here is some "shuttle" information from Steve Anderson and Charlie Rupp:

The best bet is to have the majority of the corps park at the fairgrounds at the beginning of the parade.  A few may want to drop off their equipment at the fairgrounds, and then drive to the end of the parade to haul people back to the fairgrounds following the parade. (it is an incredibly long walk)  BOTH Rick and Steve Anderson will have their trucks parked at the end of the parade, to help haul drums, contras, etc. back to the fairgrounds...........they could also take 8 - 10 people back as well.

Charlie Rupp has talked to the owner of the White Rose Bar & Grill, who is willing to pick-up SOME of the corps on Sunday.  His van will hold about 20, and it appears he will be willing to do this for nothing.  That means that any of you who could go down to the White Rose after the parade, it is a nice place with a big bar.   Our patronage would help pay Tom Sibol, the owner, back for his willingness to help us out. (he will be driving the van)  Charlie thinks making the Turkey Hill at Market and Harrison streets as the pick-up point following the parade.

For anyone wishing to park at the end of the parade, here are directions you should use:

Travel Rt. 30 East to 462, which will become Market Street (DO NOT TAKE THE 30 BYPASS).  Follow Market Street through the city.  Once you pass Sherman Street, you will want to begin looking for Albemarle Street.  Turn right onto Albermarle and look for a parking place ner Albemarle Park.  This is very close to the end of the parade..............drivers may want to follow each other to drop-off one vehicle at the end before heading back to the fairgrounds.

Hopefully this will take care of the majority of us on Sunday, unless you really like to walk!  I can only hope that I will get there soon enough to not have to "catch-up" to you after the parade has begun.

Here is some additional information regarding the Gettysburg Band-A-Rama for Thursday, November 1st.  Plan on arriving at G-burg H.S. By 6:30pm.  YOU NEED TO PARK IN FRONT OF THE SCHOOL THIS YEAR, because the area we usually park in is being used for construction for roof repair.  We will be in the orchestra room, as we were last year, but need to meet the G-burg H.S. Band in the band room to rehearse "America" at 7:00pm.  We will be entering the auditorium around 8:15pm.

Reservations for the annual Lancers Banquet (November 24th) are due to Bill Reese, along with $5.00 per person, on Sunday at the York Halloween Parade.

Music for the parade will be: "Star Wars," "Stars and Stripes" and "You'll Never Walk Alone."  See you in York.

The following letter was received by Martie and Garry Gourley from some of their Kingsmen Corps friends from California................

In wake of the devastating fires happening all around California, we should give thanks that we are safe.  Unfortunately not everyone can say this.  May people that we may see on a daily bases are in jeopardy of losing their homes, property, animals. And much more.  As a community, we are asking for your support to help those who are being affected by these fires.
We are collection items to build care packets to distribute to people who have been evacuated from their homes.  We will take donations of small personal items such as toiletries or food items such as candy bars nuts, raisins etc. For snacks.  Or we would take a donation of cash or check.
Items or checks can be mailed to
McPherson Magnet School
333 South Prospect St.
Orange, CA 92869
Or you can give it to Martie and she will send what ever you can spare out to them.
Thanks to all

Basement Practice; Gigs
From Bob Zarfoss

Lanceros,

First of all, thanks to those who attended today's rehearsal. We learned a new warm-up exercise, one predicated on the paradiddle five theme, with its permutations, along with a new ending. I'll have copies, I hope, to hand out this week, or to mail to those who don't make basement practice. I also hope to write a part for "Little Boy Lost" in the next week or so. That's one song we'll be learning in January, but I will mail you parts when it's completed.

The basement practice will be Wednesday, October 24. Because Jared will arrive late, I'd like you to commit to staying till 9:30 p.m. if possible. So far, I have commitments from Jared, Rick, Brian on snare, several quads, and Charlie on bass. I will phone Randy and Jake tomorrow. (Someone please tell me how Randy could run a technical school and not have a computer where I can reach him!) I'd like to concentrate on the Duck, which I want to play at the indoor show at Gettysburg.

In addition to this basement practice, remember that the York Halloween parade is Sunday, Oct. 28. Tom will be giving you all directions, but it appears that we're in the first division and should move fairly early. Also, the Gettysburg show is Thursday, November 1. Again, Tom will be providing instructions. We need at least four snares to do the Duck.

Although the last official rehearsal is over, there is much to be done for next year. I'll continue to have a basement practice every two weeks or so as long as drummers will attend.

Finally, my thanks to everyone who's made the drum line a success this year. We've finally seen an upturn in snare attendance, though we need a greater one in the year ahead. I am particularly pleased with the quad line, which is playing harder parts, learning them quickly, and playing them well. This despite Steve Reck's finding new, though not necessarily improved, kinds of drum stands for the quads. For those who attended today, that demonstration made the day worthwhile. For those who didn't, I can only say think trash cans and old brooms, articles much in keeping with the Halloween season. Steve even had some well conceived design help from Taylor. I suppose playing quad beside Steve can alter even the newest drum line members. And of course, I want to thank the bass drums and cymbal players for their presence, efforts, and skill.

Looking ahead to next year, we need continued good turnouts from the snares and quads, and we desperately need bass drummers, both straight and rudimental. Don't forget the banquet, either. Bill Reese needs to know if you're attending, and he also needs your deposit.

I hope to see many of you on Wednesday. I shan't be at the York parade. Months ago I promised to take friends to DC; their daughter is running in the Marine Corps Marathon, and I'm the appointed guide/photographer. You know I hate to miss a gig. My apologies. I know each of you will carry me.

UPDATE
From Tom Kittinger

REHEARSAL SUNDAY, OCTOBER 21st at 2:00pm. This will be our FINAL rehearsal of the 2007 season, and it is hoped that many of you will be with us. We will be rehearsing the "new" warm-up piece, as well as the "new" arrangement from Dick Burns. In addition, we need to plan our repertoire for our final performance of 2007 at the G-burg Band-A-Rama, on Thursday, November 1st.

Don't forget to fill-out your registration form for the annual Lancers' Banquet, slated for Saturday, November 24th at the Legion. If you haven't picked up a form yet, you can print one from the Lancers web site. You will need to get $5.00 per guest to Bill Reese by our final parade in York. PLEASE REMEMBER, THAT DEPOSIT WILL BE RETURNED TO YOU AT THE BANQUET IF YOU WISH, OR YOU MAY ALLOW THE LANCERS TO KEEP IT FOR INCLUSION IN THE "POSIE" SCHOLARSHIP FUND, THE "ALS" FUND IN TRUMAN'S NAME, OR THE TRUST FUND FOR BLAINE BROWN'S CHILDREN. The choice will be yours.

Here is the information that we finally received from the York Halloween Parade Comm.

Parade forms at the York Expo Center (fairgrounds)
the Lancers will march in Division I/placement #41
they request that we arrive at "noon." (I think if you are able to be there between noon and 1:00pm, that should be fine...........personally, I doubt I will even be out of church before 11:45, so there is no way I'll be in York by noon)
Parade will begin at 2:00pm, so we will be moving early, due to our placement
we are attempting to acquire a bus that will take us from the end of the parade route BACK to the Expo center......we'll keep you updated regarding that

I don't have any additional information at present time regarding the Band-A-Rama.............hopefully that will arrive prior to Sunday's rehearsal.

See you Sunday!

Millersville and More
From Bob Zarfoss

Lanceros,

First of all, thanks to all the drummers who made the parade in Millersville. We had a very good turnout, especially since all who were absent were working, out of town, or had obligations that required their attendance. We have a rehearsal next Sunday, at which time I'd like to add a bit to the second warm-up exercise, work on the Duck so that we can play it at the concert in Gettysburg, and also try to learn, at last, Stars and Stripes, which seems to have about four or six more drum parts than I've written. I'll also check soon on a date for one more basement practice, at which we will work exclusively on the Duck. I promise.

I'm attaching a letter I sent to the my AF Drum Corps friends re: the Millersville parade. I thought you might appreciate reading it.

BOB

******************

Gentlemen,

Today the Lancers had a parade in Millersville, which happens to be
my alma mater, by the way, a fact that has absolutely nothing to do with the story I'm about to tell.

I picked up KB at 7:15 a.m., a time when the frost was still on the
pumpkin, haze was in the air, and there was enough chill to cool off
all the guys who might have once been chasing chicks in Europe. The
corps has bought tiny, little snare drums, drums so small that old
guys can carry them. They were so small that all horn players other
than soprano players were envious. The drums sounded louder than a
traditional snare drum, and though they looked like we were the
Hitler Youth Band( well maybe not the "youth" part) they were light
and our snare drummers were happy campers, knowing their backs didn't and wouldn't hurt.

In the morning mist and cold of Millersville, KB and I found a few
wandering strangers wearing green, enough to know that the Lancers
were going to have to perform. When we assayed the damages of missing
bodies, we learned quickly that there was no drum major. So, I was
recruited. I had no mace, a al Tony, I had no strong voice, no
bearing, no uniform, not even a queer cord or spats. As you'd
suspect, I also had no idea of what I was doing. But knowing that I
had marched behind the best drum major I'd ever seen in Tony
Lombardo, and knowing that there were no high expectations for my
performance, actually no expectations at all, I accepted this role with reluctance.

The only equipment I had was a drum key, one of those new models
that has a direction changer, can use torque to crank up the drum
heads, and looks rather like a small hand gun. The corps paid no mind
to my having this, but on occasion I'd it twirl madly, and in so
doing elicit a sound like a crazed drum roll. "Bzzzzzzz." The only
effects I noticed from this antic were two barking dogs and a lady
who spun along the curb as I buzzed away. In effect, I told the corps
when to stop, when to move, when to halt, go to parade rest, etc. I'm
not sure by I may left the Lancers standing at parade rest a few
yards from the reviewing stand. I just can't remember. We had three
songs to play, which were numbered, amazingly, "One, two and three."
That sounds simple enough, but there was a corresponding song for
each number, and I had to try to remember what each number
represented. Sometimes we didn't do them in order, either, further complicating matters.

My one true goal was to teach the Lancers the "box reverse," but
that I never accomplished. We got good at going about in circles, of
course, but we never mastered moving in linear manner while reversing
direction and finding we were in some other time warp. Maybe next time.

I tell you all this because I know soon KB will be writing his own
version of my adventure, and I wanted to have my own story told
before facts were misconstrued or the truth rendered invalid.

When the parade ended, I thought of our own Tony Lombardo and I
finally realized how difficult was his position. After all, he had to
do what I did, but with a corps that was surely indifferent to all
moves save for ones made on chicks.

Millersville..........
From Tom Kittinger
Thanks to those who made it to Millersville this morning............although we were missing numerous horns, numerous drums, numerous silks, and numerous Honor Guard members, we managed to make it through the parade with numerous accolades from the crowd along the streets. (there were many today!)

As a "feather" in the caps of our Drum Majors, one never realizes their importance to the corps until there are none. (we couldn't even get our horns up in playing position at the right time..............you'd think after doing that a zillion times, it would come naturally, but it certainly didn't!) A very "special thanks" to Bob Zarfoss, who reluctantly agreed to at least get us started and stopped (which seemed far too numerous today) and to give us the "finger(s)" so we knew which piece we were to be playing...............he even found time, in his new role, to rehearse a part of the "Duck" along the parade route.........what a man he is!! Thanks, Bob!!!

In our "winding-down" season, we have ONE REHEARSAL remaining next Sunday, October 21st at 2:00pm. We need to determine our program, etc. for the G-burg H.S. Band-A-Rama, and also continue work on our new warm-up piece and the new Dick Burns arrangement of "Pieces of Dreams." PLEASE plan on joining us for this final rehearsal of the 2007 season.

In addition, we have TWO remaining "gigs." The first will take place Sunday, October 28th in York, in the form of their annual Halloween Parade. It begins at 2:00pm, however, at this time I have NO additional information for you. As I receive it, I will pass it along to you, and hopefully that will happen for next week's rehearsal.

The second will be the Band-A-Rama on Thursday, November 1st at G-burg H.S. Also waiting for final instructions regarding arrival time, location, and time of performance for this. In defense of any confusion my original date of Nov. 8th may have caused............this event is always held on the FIRST THURSDAY of November...............the past few years, it has fallen around the 6th, 7th or 8th.............before hearing from the G-burg Director, I chose the 8th, without realizing that this year, November 1st is the first Thursday of the month. Sorry for any confusion, but now you know why.

Those dates conclude our rehearsal/performance schedule for 2007. The corps culminating activity will be the Annual Lancers Banquet, being held this year on Saturday, November 24th at the Legion. Social Hour from 6:00 - 7:00; Dinner at 7:00; Awards following dinner and dancing following the awards. You need to let Bill Reese know your intentions regarding the banquet by Sunday, October 28th in York. If you haven't picked up a registration form yet, you can get one at next week's rehearsal, or from the Lancer web-site. You will need to give Bill $5.00 per person that will be attending the banquet at that time. You will receive that money back when you arrive at the banquet, unless you choose to donate it for the corps' scholarship fund, the ALS Foundation, or the Blaine Brown children's Trust Fund. The monies received will be divided between the three of those very worthwhile causes.

It was a beautiful day for a parade in Millersville, and I'm sorry so many of you missed it. Hope to see you next Sunday, and then the following Sunday to close out our parade season. Have a GREAT week.

REMINDER..........
From Tom Kittinger

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13th - MILLERSVILLE UNIV/COMMUNITY ANNUAL PARADE - 9:00am.

Directions are available on the Lancer website if you happened to lose the last email I sent with those on. REPORT TIME IS 7:45am at the UNIVERSITY STUDENT CENTER PARKING LOT.......SHUTTLE BUSSES WILL BE AVAILABLE TO TAKE YOU TO THE PARADE START!!

Please remember this is our "next-to-last" parade of the season, and it would be absolutely wonderful to complete these final two parades of 2007 with our LARGEST turnouts of the season...............it would be a fitting "end" to the 2007 season as well as a projected "beginning" of the 2008 season.

Hope to see you ALL on Saturday morning in Millersville............
THIS IS A RAIN OR SHINE EVENT!!!!

We will also be wearing FULL UNIFORM for these final two parades!!
